The Story behind The Name
The idea for naming our cherished retreat, Hermann Hideout, is a story rooted in camaraderie, a dash of humor, and beer drinking 🙃
It all began when we embarked on the ambitious project of constructing our weekend get-a-way home. With the Hideout being under construction, we found ourselves in need of temporary accommodation. Amber, ever the problem-solver, suggested we stay at her aunt’s small hunters cabin nestled outside of town in the back woods. The place was quaint, charming, and undeniably cozy—but it was also not built to house eight people. We squeezed in nonetheless, making do with air mattresses sprawled all over the floor, turning every available inch of space into a makeshift sleeping area.
One cold night, after a particularly long day of construction, we gathered around the small kitchen table of the cabin. The air was filled with laughter and the warm scent of homemade stew. As we sat there, sharing stories and reflecting on our progress, Derek leaned back in his chair, surveying the crowded room with a grin.
“You know,” he said, a twinkle in his eye, “I feel like I’m in a hideout. Like I’m an outlaw on the run.”
We all burst into laughter, the image of our group of friends as outlaws hiding from the law was too amusing. The term “hideout” resonated with us, capturing the essence of our temporary chaotic living situation and the adventurous spirit of our construction project.
Then Amber, ever full of surprising tidbits, added, “So the family story goes, my great great-great-grandma unknowingly hid Jesse James in her barn.” The room fell silent for a moment as we absorbed this unexpected twist. Imagining a connection to the infamous outlaw added a layer of intrigue and legacy to the idea of a “hideout.”
As the days went by and our home began to take shape, the name “hideout” stuck with us. It reminded us of those nights spent huddled together in the cabin, of the bonds we forged, and the sense of adventure that permeated our journey. Eventually, we decided to honor those memories by christening our new home “Hermann Hideout.”
And so, Hermann Hideout was born—a name that encapsulates not just a place but a story of friendship, resilience, and a shared sense of adventure, and a legendary connection to the past.
